Famous Five at Youth & Senior NER's

Five of New Earswick Swimming Club’s Senior Swimmers were in action this weekend at Ponds Forge, Sheffield in the North East Region Youth/Senior Championships.

The Men’s 100m Freestyle event saw Bob Hunt break the 1 minute barrier for the first time in a long course pool, when he recorded a time of 59.49. Patrick Good and Jonathon Woodford also targeted a sub-minute performance and both recorded personal best times as Good (61.65) finished 102nd and Woodford (61.98) finished 103rd.

Liam Killen, competing in a long course pool for the first time, recorded a personal best time in the Men’s 50m Breaststroke event when he finished 33rd in a time of 35.78.

Patrick Good and Jonathon Woodford had another tough encounter in the 100m Backstroke event, but both recorded long course personal best times. Good finished 26th in a time of 1:12.06 and Woodford finished 28th in a time of 1:15.52.

The boy’s battled against each other in the 50m Butterfly and the most exciting race came when Liam Killen faced Patrick Good in the same heat – both were searching for a sub-thirty time. Killen (38th) edged out Good (39th) by just 0.04 seconds and both were very unlucky to record personal best times of 30.02 and 30.06. Woodford finished 47th with a long course personal best time of 30.43. Bob Hunt, recorded a time of 30.90 to finish 53rd.

Killen, competed well in the 100m Breaststroke event when he finished 35th, recording a long course personal best time of 1:20.99 in the process.

The highlight of the competition came when Ian Smithson narrowly missed out on a place in the Final of the Men’s 50m Backstroke. Smithson recorded a long course personal best time of 31.23 as he finished 13th – just 0.51 seconds away from a place in the final. Patrick Good (27th), Jon Woodford (31st) and Bob Hunt (33rd) also competed in this event and all recorded personal best times.

Smithson and Woodford were soon back in action, when the Men’s 200m IM came along. Smithson (2:32.61) and Woodford (2:40.45) both recorded personal best times.

Another interesting encounter arose in the 50m Freestyle event when Smithson and Hunt fought hard against each other in the same heat. Both were searching for a time of 25seconds and Hunt was looking for his National Qualifying Time. The two couldn’t be separated, not even by the timing system as they touched home together in a time of 26.23. Jon Woodford (27.62), Liam Killen (28.06) and Patrick Good (28.33) also added to the list of personal best times.

The Youth Medley Team of Patrick Good (Backstroke), Liam Killen (Breaststroke), Jon Woodford (Butterfly) and Bob Hunt (Freestyle) performed well to finish 13th in a time of 4:41.03.

The Youth Freestyle Team also performed well to finish 14th in a time of 4:08.00.
