Earswick Dominate Friendly Rivals
(Above: Lewis Fairburn with
Star Performer Trophy)
The Friendly League
Team were back in action on Saturday 29th March. The Team
travelled to Thirsk to compete against hosts Thirsk White Horse,
Scarborough Swimming Club and Pocklington Dolphins. It was the
team's third fixture of the season.
The nine and under
teams got off to a great start as they both took 1st place. The
thirteen and under age groups followed suit, however the girls
team of Helen McLean, Katy Proctor, Laura Bee and Lizzie Ormerod
were too fast, so received zero points. The nine and under
swimmers showed their strength as the mixed relay team also took
first place - 100% winning streak for the 9 and unders so far!
After the first set of
team relays, New Earswick were leading the competition by 7
points.
Exceptional
performances came from individual event winners, Ellie Jackson
(11 and under 25m freestyle); James Madeley (9 and under 25m
butterfly); Katie Buchanan (9 and under 25m butterfly); Beth
Taylor (11 and under 25m backstroke); Hannah Bircumshaw (9 and
under 25m breaststroke); Owen Ward (11 and under 25m butterfly);
and Katy Proctor (13 and under 50m freestyle).
The breaststroke relay
teams also deserve a mention as all four teams took 1st place;
however the female 13 and under team were once again too fast
and received zero points for that event.
Half way through the
gala, it was announced that New Earswick had stretched their
lead by an impressive 10 points, so were an incredible 17 points
ahead of second placed Scarborough.
The final set of team
relays had the crowd going wild when the 9 and under boys team
won again. The 9 and under girls team were unfortunate as they
lost an extremely close battle for first place with Thirsk White
Horse - only 0.09sec seperated the two teams. The 11 and under
boys team followed this event with an impressive victory.
Anchor leg swimmer
Connor Whitby created tension when he entered the water in third
position during the boys mixed age canon relay. Whitby managed
to put in an impressive performance and Earswick fans lifted the
roof upon seeing him touch home in first place!
Lewis Fairburn scooped
up the Star Performer Trophy, after swimming seven events (due
to a lack of swimmers in the 13 and under age group). Fairburn
took 1st place in 3 of those events, 2nd in two and 3rd in the
remaining event.
The swimmers waited
eagerly to hear the final results. These were announced as
follows:
1st - New Earswick (116 points)
2nd - Scarborough (100 points)
3rd - Thirsk White Horse (97 points)
4th - Pocklington (81 points)
